Write The Room...all year!

My kids are crazy for Write the Room!  During Daily Five one of our big rules is that they need to STAY IN ONE SPOT!  There is just one exception...the person who is working in the Write the Room bin!  I think they love being able to walk around with a clipboard and a fun writing utensil.  Or, maybe they like what they get to see what everyone else is up to.  I'm not sure, I just know they like it a lot.  I like it because it helps kids with their fine motor skills and also gives attention to all the wonderful words that are in our classroom!  Sometimes I don't think they notice all the words that are available for them to use during writing time.  Since using these Write the Room sheets, I've noticed a lot of students referring to the walls during writing.  Yea!

I wanted to vary the focus of the bin over the course of the year.  I made this grid as my guide.
It starts out pretty easy and then gets a little harder and more focused throughout the year.  I always leave a "free write" column for any interesting words they find.  It is one of the easiest bins to set up.  All you need is this...
I covered mine with cute duct tape this summer!  Gotta love the polka dots!

I also use lots of different writing utensils to keep it fun.  The kids favorites are these...
